Former ice hockey hero Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed "The Great One" and widely considered the greatest hockey player of all time, is the son of Walter Gretzky, a former minor league hockey player who helped coach his son to success.Walter recounted these experiences in his 1985 book Gretzky: From Backyard Rink to the Stanley Cup. Walter also penned 2003's On Family, Hockey, and Healing. Walter has appeared in several documentaries about his son, as well as in a Sharp ViewCam Camcorder commercial with Wayne and Wayne's son, Ty Gretzky.

Walter's son Keith Gretzky (Wayne's brother) is a Canadian amateur hockey scout and former player for the International Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League. Although Keith was drafted by NHL team Buffalo Sabres in 1985, he never played in a regular-season game. Keith once appeared with Wayne in a 7-Up soft drink commercial. Keith's line was, "I taught him everything he knows."

Keith coached another hockey-playing Gretzky brother, Brent Gretzky, for the Asheville Smoke of the United Hockey League. Brent also played 13 games in the NHL, for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Yet another of Walter's sons, Glen Gretzky, had a role in 1987's Prom Night II. Glen was the associate producer of 2005's Waking Up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story, which detailed his father's experience recovering from a near-fatal brain aneurysm. His family also appeared in the project. Glen worked for his brother Wayne, the late actor John Candy, and Wayne's boss at the time, Bruce McNall, when the three men briefly owned the Toronto Argonauts Canadian football team.

Wayne's wife, Janet Jones, is a dancer/actress who performed in the 1980 TV movie Snow White Live, 1982's Annie, and 1983's Staying Alive. She has had roles in several films, including 1984's The Flamingo Kid, 1985's A Chorus Line, 1988's Police Academy 5: Assignment: Miami Beach, 1992's A League of Their Own, and 2006's Alpha Dog. Wayne and Janet first met in 1984, when she was a dance contestant and he was a judge on the TV show Dance Fever. She appeared with Wayne in a Saturday Night Live skit in 1989 and on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine in 1997.

Wayne and Janet's son Tristan Gretzky appeared with his mother in the 2006 film Two Tickets to Paradise.

Their son Trevor Gretzky is a baseball player who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2011.

Their daughter Paulina Gretzky is an aspiring singer/model/actress who appeared as "Pink Girl" in 2000's short In God We Trust, 2009's Fame as "Gorgeous Blonde Senior," and "The Deputy" in 2011's Guns, Girls and Gambling, which was executive produced by her mother. In 2004, Paulina sang at a hockey alumni game in which her father was playing. Her song "Collecting Dust" was featured on MTV's hit series Laguna Beach in 2005. In 2012, it was announced that Paulina would appear in the Adam Sandler flick Grown Ups 2.
